New Sounds #39 24/3/16

WET PAINT - SETTING THE STAGE
Compelling and polished future-R&B funk from Halifax, Nova Scotia producer/remixer duo James Gaudet and Dan Shanahan, follow their inaugural 2013 debut, 'The Rain Came Down', and last year's 'Limitless' and 'Gold Lights' (in between remixes for others). Star rating: ****/5

NIGHT GAMES - FAITHLESS
New single from east-London electro pop duo, Constance and Paul. Smoothly delivered hushed vocals over deft synth loops and crisp production. Catch live at The Waiting Room, London on April 27. Star rating: ***.5/5

THE PARKING LOT EXPERIMENTS - LIFE AFTER DEATH
Lead track from the Melbourne outfit's new album 'Beginners' with a liberal smattering of quirky, melodic off-kilter pop and submerged vocals, and way less downbeat than its title suggests. Star rating: ****/5

TOOTHLESS - TERRA
Premiered by Zane Lowe on Beats 1 this week, the debut single (released May 13 via Transgressive/PradaYse Records on limited edition 7” vinyl and digitally) from Bombay Bicycle Club bassist Ed Nash. Self-produced, with additional production by Jack Steadman, once past the heavy breathing intro, it's a subtle slide down dreamy folk-electronica. Catch live at London's Moth Club on May 17. Star rating: ****/5

MARK ELLIOTT - DEAD END LOVE AFFAIR
"Winter 2015 – I’m not happy with the music I’m making, my relationship is failing and I’m ginger for fuck's sake. Deciding on isolation as the best course of action, me and producer Dave Tidmarsh road tripped to Cornwall and rented a cottage by the sea to write and record everyday for a week."  One of the results you can now hear from the Leicester-based artist, set to appear on his debut EP, ‘China Doll’, due for summer release. The lyrics are earnest and astute, the vocal one which slips easily through the ears. Watch out for this guy. If you know where, catch at a secret Sofar Sounds London gig on April 20. Star rating: ****.5/5
