New Sounds #63 June 11 2016

THE HALLS - LEMONADE
Brisbane indie rock duo - vocalist Bec and guitarist Ross - unveil their debut single, out this week. Produced by Konstantin Kersting (The Belligerents, Kingswood), it's a dark pop piece that Bec hooks you in with by her stirring vocal, against a propulsive beat. Polished first offering. Star rating: 4.5/5

NIGHT GAMES - FAITHLESS
Atmospheric new single from east-London future-electro pop duo, Constance and Paul. Smoothly delivered ethereal vocals over deft synth loops and crisp production in this follow-up to ‘Faithless’. Night Games are playing a series of exclusive gigs this year, with the first on June 16 at F. Cooke Pie and Mash shop on Hoxton Street, east London. Star rating: 4/5

BRIJS - THUNDER
Following his 2015 debut EP 'Friends', 25-year-old south-east London producer Brijs (pronounced "Bryce") returns with his second release, which came out last week. Blending rhythmic electronic and organic element with a certsin chilled delivery. Star rating: 3/5

KITTENS OF THE INTERNET - BITTER
New Zealand electronic pop duo, Katie and Mahuia, share the latest single from their upcoming debut EP, out on July 8. 'Bitter', say the Auckland-based pair, is about "those sleepless nights, too many crazy thoughts spinning around in your head, you lie there, minutes, hours tick by.....ignorance was once my bliss, now I'm a fool tangled up in this mess." Star rating: 3/5

COUSIN KULA - HESITATION
Debut single out this week from Bristol-based alt-psych pop outfit. Produced by Jim Barr of Portishead and Get The Blessing, they combine elements of psychedelia, Afrobeat, indie-rock and trip-hop in a unique style. Catch live on June 15 at Cambridge for the King's Affair Ball, followed by Bristol's Start The Bus on 17th w/ Bad Sounds. Star rating: 3.5/5

BEACH BABY - U R
"New" (although some may well recall this track appearing a year ago as the other side to 'No Mind No Money') single, out this week - preceding a London Scala headline date in September from the London quartet, and their debut album scheduled for later this summer via Island. Produced by Adam Jaffrey (Bloc Party, Dev Hynes), with chiming guitars and backing 'woo-ooh's keep it buoyant. Star rating: 3.5/5
