New Sounds #103 October 8 2016

RAW FABRICS - SLIP AWAY
New track from the LA-based alt-rocker Jack Bruno, and follows ‘Get Me The Hell Out of Here' from earlier this year. The song is influenced by Jack’s personal experiences: “I’ve had many experiences when I’ve gotten really close to getting something I really wanted, but then last minute it doesn’t work out; it’s like ‘fuck what do I do now?’ ‘Slip Away’ is about how to get over that frustration and enjoy things as they are to keep moving forward.” Sharp, punchy beat and confident vocals over seering guitar. Star rating: ★★

VA VIOLET - DRIFT AWAY
The 'punk' descriptive tag on Bandcamp may be something of a misnomer here as this San Francisco outfit display all the makings of dream-popgaze and about the only thing punk is that all seven tracks on their debut EP, 'Out of Disorder' - released at the end of September - hover around the two-minute mark. Star rating: ★★

BORN STRANGER - BE SOMEONE
A striking synth-led return for the Manchester electronic duo with this new single released on October 14: "a wake up call; a realisation, a message to say 'you're better than this, get out there and do it," is how it's described by David Maddox-Jones on vocals . Catch live on October 24 at The Finsbury, London. Star rating: ★★

READERSHIP - BORED TO DEATH
The Pennsylvania power pop outfit precede their October 21 release of debut record, 'New Ways To Make The Same Mistakes', with this lead single of infectious chorus and bouncy melodies. You won't be bored. Star rating: ★★

LIVING DEAD GIRL - A FALSE ARCHITECT

London-based duo, Jessica English (lead vocals, synth, piano, programming) and Jonno Lloyd (guitar, bass, synth, programming, backing vocals), merge organic sounds with the electronic to create something melodious and soothing on this B-side to recent single ‘Autumn’. Star rating:★★
