Words: Ellie Ward
Writing and recording in a Brisbane bedroom since the age of 13, the now 20-year-old indie-folk singer-songwriter Ella Metherell has just put out her latest track, 'Rocked'.
It is, she says, "a little different to what I usually create...a song about being with someone who you don't really fit with." By 'different' it would appear that she may be taking a step away from her folk roots, and moving into an electronic field, with this dark and melancholic track that is helmed by the clipped beats and Ella's sweet, yet a little disturbing, voice.
Listen to 'Evil Child' (which she played all instruments on: guitar, glockenspiel, synths, percussion) from around last summertime, and there can be heard the change in sound between then and now.
She says of the song that it is "about a much younger, more misunderstood Ella's experience with depression and the stigma it comes with. I wanted to have a go at tackling that stigma but I didn't want it to be this really sad sounding song, so I tried to make it a little bit fun and nostalgic."
Her open, honest lyrical style is engaging and captivating, framed by a simple musical accompaniment, as evidenced here on an early number, 'TV', and it will be interesting to see where her music takes her.
