Listen :: Y G H D stream debut EP 'Beautiful Mess'
Words: Linn Branson
'Beautiful Mess' is the debut EP by Y G H D (yes, another of those bands who like gaps in between the letters in their name. I still blame The 1975 for starting all that shizz), released late last month via GIRL Records.
They've been around for a few years since 'White Eyes' in 2015, now Y G H D (aka Younghood), the Kingston-upon-Thames / South London four-piece indie rockers deliver this three track package. There are plenty of wiry guitars and pummeled drums on lead track 'Ghosts on VHS', sounding very much like the sticksman here has aspirations to be in a much heavier rock band than this one (fortunately) transpires to be.
'Afterglow' hits a slower pace, less bombastic style, governed by guitarist Joe Sharman's vocals, while closer 'Sugar' brings back Sean Bowen's explosive drum bursts interspersed in a song dominated by the layers of wiry guitars, with its last half showing some interesting chord structures.
