Track Of The Day :: Codewalkers - Runaround

Words: Linn Branson

Sometimes an editor just has to take executive decisions and overrule others' opinions. A very firm case here being Cardiff-based Codewalkers' upcoming single 'Runaround'.

Featuring local Cardiff singer Elin Fouladi, this third single from Codewalkers - released November 3 - Seun Babatola (vocals) and local North Wales brothers, Dafydd (guitar) and Ben (synth) Dabson, drew a mixed reaction from our Roundtable panel earlier in the week.

Bang Bang Romeo's Richard Gartland said: "Beautiful arrangement...lyrics are strong, great message. A bit all over the place on the whole.." While Little Indie's Richard O'Hagan felt, "...really conflicted by this. They've tried to tackle a difficult subject...but the lyric is just so grating." And for The Van T's Shaun Hood, it was "a little on the schizophrenic side...a sombre a cappella...soulful female vocals...followed by a dubstep drop and a bit of melodic rapping that I can't say I'm sold on..."

With its alt-R&B, hip-hop, reggae and electronica mix, 'Runaround' does cross genre boundaries, but that's what in my opinion makes it stand out. The juxtaposing too of the softer vocals with the hard-edged rap sections, adheres to the subject matter, adding that correspondence of light and shade. In my ears, it's a song that catches your attention on first hearing - making you want to dive back in straight away for a second go. Try it and see.

'Runaround' will appear on the band's debut album 'Even Better Enemies', due for release early next year.

Codewalkers play Cardiff's Inkspot tonight (October 28).
