HILMA NIKOLAISEN - MERRILY MERRILY
Known as the bass player in her brother Emil’s psychedelic noisepop outfit Serena-Maneesh - one of the most influential Norwegian bands of the last decade - Hilma's solo career continues with this mellow festive offering.
CHERRYADE - SLEIGH ME
London pop duo Ella and Alex deliver a saucy 'Santa Baby' of sleigh bells, thumping beat and throbbing synths, backing Ella's cheeky lyrics of "Santa fill my stocking tonight / won't you come and mince my pie? / you can give me / you can give me / a good ride".
THYLA - CHRISTMAS WRAPPING
The Brighton outfit surround themselves with Christmas spirit on this cover of The Waitresses’ classic. Speaking of the cover, the band say: “A lot of our music is inspired by the post punk/new wave era. The original song is Millie’s favourite Christmas tune so we thought it would be cool to get in the festive spirit and do a cheeky cover.”
THE SPOOK SCHOOL - SOMEONE TO SPEND CHRISTMAS WITH
Glasgow indie-poppers reveal their Christmas single, released December 15. Bass player Anna Corey says it is "a song about figuring out how you want to conduct your own relationships when it feels like the world is full of conflicting advice about the ‘best’ way to do it, whether that be monogamy, polyamory, or something else entirely. The refrain relates to the ideal of having one important person in your life with whom you’ll always spend your special occasions. Merry Christmas from The Spook School!”
MARCHING CHURCH - CHRISTMAS ON EARTH
Danish outfit Marching Church return just before the year's end with a Christmas carol unlike what you'd normally expect. The 7" single comes in a mail-order only edition of 500, with 250 of the copies being on green vinyl, and the other 250 being on red vinyl. Draped in the melancholic backdrop of December, Elias Bender Rønnenfelt's ode is "a eulogy to the benevolence of Christmas time. Now deck the halls with boughs of holly!"
GEORGE EZRA - WHITE CHRISTMAS
The singer-songwriter embraces the season with his own smooth cover of Bing Crosby's Christmas classic, 'White Christmas’.
CATHOLIC ACTION - NO ANGELS
Following their new album ‘In Memory Of’, the Glasgow lads have shared their Christmas offering with 'No Angels' that comes with a special Christmas mix of album track, ‘New Year’. “You can’t have sex at Christmas / can’t make love or screw / you can’t have sex at Christmas, television and food." you can’t help but agree. Catch the sex starved band at Glasgow's Nice N Sleazy’s on New Year's Eve.
HOLY MOLY & THE CRACKERS - PUNK DRUNK XMAS EVE
Produced by Matt Terry (The Enemy) and self-released on the band’s Pink Lane Records, this catchy festive ode of “gypsy folk rock” from the Newcastle/ Yorkshire outfit precedes new album 'Salem'.
