Cape Town's H O N E Y M O A N emerge with stunning double A-side debut

Words: Ellie Ward

With their double-flip debut, '/3'/ 'We', officially released on May 25 via Roastin' Records, Cape Town's H O N E Y M O A N are already impressing listeners.

The five-piece, who formed last year with a shoegaze/dreampop sound in mind, but who seem to have picked up more psych-rockgaze influences, are made up of members of various local Cape Town psych bands - including bassist Keenan Nathan Oakes of Sakawa Boys and Wildernessking, and drummer Nicolaas Rossouw from Retro Dizzy - and was engineered and mixed by Josh Berry of Cape Town dreampop band Twin Weaver.

"'/3' is the second song we ever wrote together as a full band," they say of the infectiously bouncy track with copious amounts of distorted fuzz, "and naturally we opted for a very live sound in the recording to try and capture the same energy we found when rehearsing."

'We', is a slower, more ponderous, bass-driven groove and 90s RnB hooks, where "Josh Berry helped out tremendously with drum programming, vintage synth tones, psychedelic flourishes and about 100 takes for a 20 second guitar solo." The track also contains a sample of 'Inu Mbi Awon Ota Lasan' by Nigerian musician Alhadji Ayinla Omowura & his Apala Group from the album 'Owo Tuntun'.
