Track Of The Day :: Yr Eira - Galw Ddoe Yn Ol
Words: Linn Branson
We don't have a clue what Yr Eira are singing about here on new track 'Galw Ddoe Yn Ôl' - and unless you're a Welsh speaker, neither will you.
The Bangor alt-indie pop four-piece follow last year's debut album, 'Toddi', and previous single releases such as 'Dros Y Bont', with this latest, out now via Welsh independent label, Recordiau IKAChing Records.
We know that galw ddoe yn ol translated means 'call back yesterday' - but only because they told us! - and we also know that regardless of language, it sounds pretty good indeed.
There's a carefree spirit to the melodies here on 'Galw Ddoe Yn Ôl', which the accompanying seaside shot video picks up on. It may be a hard number to sing along to, but it doesn't stop one feeling the catchiness of it, and the psychgaze-esque guitars are heavenly.
The band describe it as a song that plays on the ideas of teenage summers in Wales. "To be honest, there isn’t much to get excited about the summer as a young person in Wales," they explain, "but for once we’re trying to be positive, the concept of being on the cusp of something better. Summers in Wales tend to be bland and boring, but the song suggests there is 'no need to call back yesterday'."
