Best new tracks Down Under #37

With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.

BODY TYPE - PALMS

Sydne scuzz punk foursome precede their self-titled debut EP, out via Partisan Records on October 19, with this melodic garage-esque track, produced by Konstantin Kersting. “'Palms' comes from observing moments... when everything in your life lines up in a way that feels like the universe is trying to tell you something," says lead vocalist Sophie McComish. "Ultimately though, regardless of whether you are in control of your own fate or if Lady Destiny might have something to do with it doesn’t really matter, the world still turns."

LOVER - EAGLE TO THE PREY

The accomplished debut single by Sydney's Oliver Kirby mixes a blend of R&B, soul and pop. Produced with fellow artists Tanssi and Oh Boy, it fields a warped guitar sample, sharp percussion and a falsetto vocal, interspersed with a brief rap interlude.

HANNAH KATE - CRY JULY

Following last year's debut EP 'Late Brunch', and taken from their forthcoming debut album, the Melbourne garage pop four-piece - who take their name from their flame-haired 20-year-old vocalist - released this single cut on September 12. An engaging two-plus-minutes of scuzzy, lo-fi guitars, catchy rhythms and dreamy vocals. "It’s a bit of a fun one," says Hannah. "I called it 'Cry July' because my mates were doing Dry July and I shouted out one of them during a set saying good job for doing it, but didn’t know that she caved that night and was holding a pint while audience members looked at her confused, it was pretty funny."

EDWARD R. - PARADISE

Melbourne singer-songwriter Ed Roberts returns with his first new release in two years, taken from his upcoming EP, 'Body Corporate', out October 12. The Tame Impala-esque new single is a washed-out, lush ride. "It’s a groover, a heartbreaker and a musical trip. The violin lines are quite possibly my favourite piece of music I’ve ever written (especially the ending). Put it on when you wake, on a road trip, sparking up, after kick on’s, it’s pretty much a solid ‘good vibes’ tune," he says.

THE MELANCHOLIES - CUTE AGGRESSION

The debut single, released September 14, by Auckland, NZ-based duo Holly Coogan and Leisure's Tom Young. Psych-driven electronic beats, drawn from inspiration by Throbbing Gristle's Genesis P. Orridge (Psychic TV), alongside dark synths and echoing, reverbed vocals make this an intriguing first outing. "'Cute Aggression' is a song about passion and devotion," says Young. "It’s super strange but also a really beautiful act of ultimate devotion."

SCABZ - STARTING LINE

"Bit of punk, bit of pub rock. Lots of local references, anger about the state of the world and general misandrist-based humour" is how the Newtown, New South Wales trio describe themselves. Ahead of a new EP release, they have dropped this single which sums up their fierce, fiery and scorching sound.
