Sing & Tell :: Bakers Eddy

Melbourne, Australia-via-New Zealand punk rockers Bakers Eddy released their infectious bruiser ‘Good Decisions’ in the UK on June 1, shortly after they had impressed with their appearance in the UK at The Great Escape festival in May. Their latest single, 'Leave It To Me', dropped on September 20.

Who are you?

Hey, my name is Booj (Alex Spagnolo), I play guitar. My dickhead twin, Ian Spagnolo, plays bass. The myth, the man, the ego, Ciarann Babbington. plays guitar and shouts heaps. Aaaand...bringing up the rear is a lanky piece of weaponry by the name of Jamie Gordon who plays the tub thumpers.

Tell us something about yourself and how you came to be where you are today.

We all met each other the first year of high school in 2009 in Wellington, NZ, where we spent a lot of time not in class and started making noise shortly after we discovered we all liked Green Day. We kept at it all throughout high school and decided to keep keeping at it when we left. So we kept gigging relentlessly around Wellington and NZ until old mate Tom Larkin saw us at a showcase in Auckland and invited us to move to Melbourne in 2017 to keep at keeping at it.

Give us an idea of your musical style and influences.

Me and Ian were around very eclectic music growing up. Dad would be listening to Kylie Minogue one minute then Kraftwerk the next; he'd delve into metal once in awhile so that was a big inspiration growing up. Ciarann was around a lot of reggae, world, big band rag time, dat swing, naah mean? Jamie definitely has a reggae influence due to his dad who is a hippy, lots of world and Kiwi rock bands like The Mutton Birds and Crowded House. The Australian music scene has been a big influence since moving over aswell, got stuck into the surf/punk bands like Skeggs, Hockey Dad and Waax. You can probably hear a surf feel to the chorus of 'Leave It To Me'.

Explain the production and writing process behind your songs.

Four dudes in a room making noise, and when the noise begins to sound decent we build on that. Since doing a 50 songs in 50 days experiment last year we've kind of gotten into the rythem of always finishing a song that day and recording it. What you end up with is a whole lot of shit house songs but every now and then you hit gold. The idea is to free up yourself to any idea that happens on the day, which eliminates the feeling of needing to make every part perfect. It's worked alright for us.

Tell us a little about your new single.

It's definitely a heavier song in terms of lyrical content, which contrasts the upbeat vibe of the song quite well. I know it's a personal song to Ciarann but certain life situations happened while we were working on it and it's not hard to hear the meaning behind the lyrics.
