TOY return with not one, but two new songs

Words: Ellie Ward

TOY are marking their return with two new tracks, along with a London show later this month.

Out tomorrow (September 14) via Tough Love, the two-track 12" was recorded and mixed by the band between keys man Max Oscarnold’s Stoke Newington flat and a south London studio, and is the first release for TOY on their new label, and is an advance foretaste of the band's follow-up album to 2016's 'Clear Shot', due in January 2019.

‘The Willo’ is a dreamlike, seven-minute minutes, with Maxim's fingerpicking acoustic melding with electric twang from Dominic O’Dair and a whirling organ from Oscarnold, gives this elegant creation an extra layer of disorientation and depth.

“People appear to have seen Will-o’-the-wisp, a mysterious green-blue light, over the centuries. It generally means something ominous is about to happen", says vocalist Tom Dougall.

With thunderously metronomic drums from Charlie Salvidge and a ferocious guitar from O’Dair, 'Energy’ lives up to its name. The lyrics, culled from a story written by Oscarnold about a nighttime ritual, are obscured by the barrage-like forward momentum of the music.

Take a listen to both songs, above and below.

TOY play a free entry show on September 28 at the Shacklewell Arms in London.
