Track Of The Day :: The LaFontaines - Alpha
Words: Amelia Callister
Could be wrong, but I am sure Glasgow's The LaFontaines never sounded (or looked, for that matter) as American as American as they do here on new single ‘Alpha’? Had to go and check I hadn't mistaken them for someone else.
But no, this is the right band, and this latest cut follows 'All In' from a few months ago, and marks their new stamp as a three-piece after the departure of Neil Mulholland, and heralds the release of their third album, 'Junior', out on June 14 via So Recordings.
There feels a darker, heavier punch to The LaFontaines now, and 'Alpha', with its edgy hip-hop rap, backbeats, big pop-rock chorus, shows the band melding genres to deliver a hard-hitting anthem.
“’Alpha’ comes as result of the losses we’ve had recently in this area from young males, predominately of the ‘Alpha’ stereotype,” says frontman Kerr Okan. “I’ve often struggled with my emotions - anything other than aggression was always seen as a weakness and something that should be locked away. ‘Alpha’ marks the point in my own journey where I realised that there was something real to be gained from embracing the spectrum of emotions - whether you’re male or not.”
The band also embark on a UK headline tour next month to support the release of their new album. See dates further down.
