With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.
PRIMO! - MACHINE
SEMANTICS - SDE
The Brisbane-based four-piece share their first punk-rock track of the year, after last year's EP 'If You're Not Alright'. The fast-paced, chugging 'SDE' they describe as "The tales of a narcissistic lover, aware of their self-destructive behaviors but not wanting to show vulnerability to overcome the obstacles or even acknowledge them. Instead, neglecting all the problems and even embracing how helpless they feel in that situation. The track weaves its way through honest confessions of the lovers until ultimately admitting his faults, finding empowerment through vulnerability."
SOFT PLASTICS - I LOVE MY WIFE
Wellington, NZ garage-pop trio Soft Plastics, the project of Sophie Scott Maunder (Beatcomber), Jonathan Shirley and Laura Robinson, arrive with their catchy, fuzzy debut. Recorded by Oliver Devlin (Hans Pucket), 'I Love My Wife' with its lyrics "I don't care what people say, I just don't want to be on my own now" is apt for our present isolating climate.
ESSIE HOLT - SALT
It's been a while since we last featured Essie - 2018 in fact with 'Better For You'. Now we have another from the Melbourne indie-pop songstress to precede her upcoming debut EP, 'Silent Wars', out this Friday, April 3. Released last week, the three-minute, low-key 'Salt' she says, is about "the angels I found, the ones I lost, and then ones who stuck by me when I went through some pretty huge life changes."
REDHOOK - DEAD WALK
Sydney trio RedHook debut new track 'Dead Walk', which, says drummer Alex Powys, "really hits home with a lot of people considering what is happening around the world at the moment." Produced by Stevie Knight (Yours Truly, Stand Atlantic) and Dave Petrovic (Tonight Alive, Northlane), the groove-infused ‘Dead Walk’ opens with a slinky bass groove and lead singer Emmy Mack’s expressive, autotune-tinged pop vocals, building over driving four-to-the-floor kicks.
BIG LEAGUE - EARTH ACTIVE NEUTRAL
The Melbourne indie rockers - first heard by Little Indie back in 2018 with 'Olympic Mystery' - haul out another rich concoction of fuzzy, squally guitars, taken off their new album, 'A Symbol Like A Cloud', out in May through Off The Hip Records. "With so much fear and unrest surrounding our current way of life, and the future of everything we know and love, it's as good a time as any to ask what the people who have the power to change the course of the future, value, through the medium of song. This track rocks the way an indie guitar song should."
