Introducing :: New post-punks off the Dublin block - Innocent Wilson

Words: Linn Branson

Chances are, if you're not Irish and/or not had your ear firmly fixed to the Dublin underground scene these last months, you may have yet to happen upon emerging four-piece post-punks Innocent Wilson.

You might be forgiven though as they have yet to put down their debut release - we are told to "keep your eyes peeled" as something will be dropping in the next few months - until then, there is only a newly uploaded live video online.

Filmed for Fuzzed Up Indie Club by Michael White at Dublin venue The Underground, the session included the raw, to-the-point 'Social Pariah', as seen below.

"'Social Pariah' is about how people judge other people before knowing anything about them," vocalist Aaron Lawlor tells Little Indie. 'We feel a lot of young people get slagged for doing what they love and because there not the same as others. The people putting them down are usually wasters."

With a feel of The Murder Capital, Idles, and Fontaines D.C. about them, you can catch an idea of where this band are coming from, and what to expect in the future. Though still in their infancy, the four - Aaron, Caelan (guitar), Brandon (bass) and Reese (drums) - show signs that they could well be making a strong impression over the next couple of years.

"We all came together about three years ago, from knowing each other from school," explains Aaron. "We played together for a few months, but just couldn’t click. We all wanted to play different genres of music and we couldn’t find a singer as I was playing the guitar. Then, about eight months ago, I text everyone asking to get back to jam and showed them some lyrics I'd written. We could see we were getting a lot further then the last time and were writing some good songs. Ever since that we’ve been flat out making stuff."

Although, he says, they would consider themselves a post-punk band, "we like to think we can put our own spin on that. We don’t want to restrict ourselves, and enjoy being more creative in the studio. Our inspirations would be bands such as Girl Band, Idles and the whole new Dublin scene of post-punk. There's well too many great bands at the moment. We aim to get to a point where we can all do this for a living and get to travel to all the places we want to go while doing what we love."

Keep watch on their Facebook page as they have a gig lined up next month at The Harbour Bar in Bray, Co Wicklow (date to be confirmed).

"After this virus disappears away we plan to gig as much as we can in order to bring our music to everyone and increase our fanbase," he adds.

Which seems certain they will.
