New Australian artist Henry Alexander releases second single 'Trouble Maker' that's a retro banger

Words: Linn Branson

It is perhaps unfortunate that Melbourne artist Henry Alexander has chosen to make his entrance at this time, with the world's attention focused elsewhere, because firing out two very good singles in the last few months, show he has something that should be recognised - and plenty of it.

The 19-year-old's new second release, ‘Trouble Maker’, with its strong retro 80s groove, catchy hooks and style, that makes one immediately think of INXS, is intensely moreish in its pop-rock production and light funk traces.

"At my older sister’s 18th birthday party, the biggest draw to the dance floor was ‘Come on Eileen’ (Dexy’s Midnight Runners). Other tracks by bands such as The Cure, Devo, INXS, Oasis and Duran Duran all had a particular energy. I love that aspect of music," he admits.

"'Trouble Maker' describes something everyone goes through," he adds. "Ambition, two steps forward one step back, envy, feeling controlled. When really, just do whatever you want, live however you choose. Just don't hurt anybody. It’s how I feel, it’s what I believe."

Dropping his debut 'The Song That Rang Out', this track is a more controlled, measured three minutes that showcases his vocal range, against rumbling drums and a light touch of keys.

When music gets back on track, it will be interesting to hear where Henry Alexander goes next.
