Home Counties Sing & Tell on their post-Haze project's influences, Robbie Williams, and new single 'That's Where The Money's Gone'

Bristol-based five-piece Home Counties released their latest single, 'That's Where The Money's Gone', last week, lifted from the band's debut EP 'Redevelopment', also released last week via Alcopop! Records. The band's angular guitar work and furious percussion unite to create melodically rigid, socially-charged anthems that are both lyrically tongue-in-cheek and scathingly satirical.

Hi, we're Little Indie... and you are?

Hey, this is Will Harrison, and I play guitar and sing in Home Counties. The rest of us are Conor Kearney (guitar, vocals), Barn Peiser Pepin (synth, percussion, vocals), Sam Woodroffe (bass) and Dan Hearn (drums).

Give us a brief snapshot about yourself and what brought you to where you are today.

Me and Dan have actually been playing together since we watched the School of Rock in primary school. We formed our previous project - Haze - with Conor when we were about 14 and played covers, gradually starting to write originals as we got a bit older. We played some great shows (touring with Pip Blom was a personal highlight). Barn had been playing in his other project - Jerry - and we had been friends for years so when we wanted to start a new project it was very natural that he would join. Sam, who I met at Uni in Bristol, joined on bass and we became Home Counties in January earlier this year.

For those in the dark, provide us with a clue to your musical style and influences.

It’s a pretty mixed bag really. Key influences are probably Television, DEVO, Talking Heads… and then more recent acts like Parquet Courts. We’re also into a lot of pop music. I love Britney Spears and Robbie Williams. We strive to make wonky bangers.

Can you explain a little about your production and writing process.

It’s a very collaborative process. We all bring ideas to the table and work to develop them into finished products. The only upside of lockdown was the shit-ton of time we had to write together. Conor and I live together so we just cracked on and we’ve pretty much finished penning the next EP.

Tell us more about your new single.

‘That’s Where The Money’s Gone’ is our third single, and the lead track from our debut EP. It’s the most collective song on the EP, as we all sing it and we recorded it round a room facing each other. The lyrics are simple and to the point - they were written much on the spot at an early HC practise and have remained unchanged, but I wanted to keep it that way to capture the spontaneity of those early HC sessions.

Obviously at this time we won't be able to catch up with you at any live shows just yet, but can you tell us what you may have pencilled in otherwise for the rest of the year?

Well, funnily enough, we actually played a socially distanced outside show in London at The Dalston Victoria last Sunday. We were just as surprised as you when the offer came through - we honestly didn’t think we’d be back on stage this year. It was so much fun to actually play to a crowd of people again.

We’re also meant to be heading across to Rotterdam for Left Of The Dial Festival next month so we’re hopeful that it can go ahead. Who knows - you’ve got to just take each day as it comes at the moment, I think.

Where can we hear more of your music?

The ‘Redevelopment' EP is on Spotify, Apple Music, Soundcloud etc., etc. And we’re also releasing a full band live session very soon, so follow our socials to hear about that.
