Following their rocky, riffing four-minute debut roller 'Fraud' from earlier in the year, Glasgow-based alt-indies Pizza Crunch now bite back with 'Twelve Month Seasonal Depression'.
Released last Friday (September 11), the song, vocalist/guitarist Ewan Hearns, tells Little Indie, was recorded during lockdown in the quartet's respective homes, before being put together and mastered by Chris Marshall.
It comes together as a sharp and catchy three and a half minutes, despite the lyrics reflecting a more sombre tone - and perhaps apt when many will have truly been experiencing feelings of depression over the Covid pandemic and ensuing self-isolation: "For many stretching days / lighten the tension / Not for you / as you're plunged into a twelve month seasonal depression / Time moves alone / Being ok is postponed / Icy morning on a whim / Summer proves just as dim."
"The lyrics came from that thought of ‘oh it’ll get better in summer' or 'Christmas is always fun'," explains Hearns, "and obviously the idea is that seasons don’t make much difference if you’re feeling shit.
"When I think of songs about issues like this, Ian Curtis and Joy Division is what always springs to mind; although the song is supposed to be a bit tongue-in-cheek and jokey, as a 12-month seasonal depression is, of course, just depression. I think writers like Courtney Barnett, Alex Turner, Tom Waits and Father John Misty have inspired that kind of playful tone. The fact the music is quite bright and happy sounding adds to this - although that was more of a happy accident than anything."
