Track Of The Day :: Flawes - Don't Count Me Out

Words: Ellie Ward

London (via Huddersfield)-based alt-pop trio Flawes certainly don't live up to their name on their return single ‘Don’t Count Me Out’, released last Friday via Red Bull Records. The track, coming after a self-imposed 18-month hiatus, shows no imperfection that we can detect.

A soaring ode to self-belief, it was inspired by a songwriting session in which the band were forced to stand their ground. “It’s a passionate song about refusing to be brushed aside,” says frontman JC, who provides  the emotion-riven vocals. “It’s a universal message, but having been away for a while, it’s also us announcing that we’re back, on our own terms.”

If the reaction they receive following ‘Don’t Count Me Out’ equals that of their initial reception, Flawes look set to be back on a steady upward trajectory course. When BBC Introducing played their first track ‘Don’t Wait For Me’, it was made Record of the Week on Radio 1, reached No.8 on Spotify’s viral chart and was chosen to soundtrack trailers for the hit US TV series Lie To Me. The next two years was a blur of shows, songwriting, airports and festival appearances - before their extended break.

‘Don’t Count Me Out’ marks the start of a new era for Flawes, with more new music to be announced in the coming weeks.

Stay tuned.
