With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.
SKUX - PAINTED BLANK
Auckland, NZ's punk riot grrrl Ayisha Jaffer follows her frenetic recent single 'Kudis', with a second invigorating punch, from her 'Kudis' EP, out on August 23. "'Painted Blank' is the relationship closure song that your brain was culminating but your mouth didn’t let you say or perhaps your emotions spat them out in a different, more destructive way. This track demands reflection and accountability from partners of the past who would prefer to click 'delete' and paint all of their memories blank."
MYLK - IT'S NOT MY FAULT
The Melbourne four-piece deliver a jangly indie-pop vibe witg catchy hooks and vocal, with subtle percussion and guitars. "It was while jamming the song instrumentally that we just happened to sing the words ‘it’s not my fault’ to the tune of the chorus and the rest of the lyrics just came together. The lyrical content of the song is not meant to be taken super seriously at all, with the track aiming to be fun and catchy, and something to make people move," says singer Nathaniel Peacock. Catch live at Melbourne's Grace Darling Hotel on August 23.
DEBBIES - WHAT DO I KNOW
The surf-rock two-piece from Jervis Bay, New South Wales, 18-year-olds Noah Egan and Alex Robertson, offer a glimpse of emerging high school talent with this third single of 2019 after debut 'Comfort Zone' and 'Majority of My Time'. Delivering a pop-punk-rock blend at just under three minutes, it is both infectious and melodic, and definitely requires more than one play.
AKUREI - HOLLOW
Brisbane singer/songwriter and producer follows his recent ‘Stockholm’ with another cut from his forthcoming second EP, 'September'. Light R&B inflected melodies and a delicate vocal touches add to the understated production, minimal synths and bass lines.
SUNSCREEN - THINK ABOUT YOU
The Sydney indie rock four-piece share the second cut from their forthcoming second EP, 'Falling In An Elevator', out August 23 via Spunk! Records. After the recent 'High Over Love', the romantically-charged, 'Think About You' is "Sunscreen's love song", says vocalist and guitarist Sarah Sykes. "It's about thinking about someone all day. This song is reminiscent of all things new, bright, and exciting - the feeling when you just can't get close enough to someone."
SUNDAY AVENUE - MELTED HEARTS
Funky pop-rock quartet from the Central Coast bring more infectiously rhythmic hooks and melodies in this new dancey jam, their follow up to ‘Moonlight’, and the lead cut from their debut 'Contrast' EP. Catch live on August 31 at Croatian Wickham Sports Club in Wickham, NSW.
