Little Indie's Best of 2019 Part 4

After another year of hits and highs, we asked some of our writers to take a look back at what rocked their 2019.


Sam Geary views 5 favourite acts that have come from over the Irish sea during the last 12 months.


ODD MORRIS

For those still swinging on the coat-tails of Fontaines D.C., Thumper, the recently disbanded Otherkin and Just Mustard - hold the bus. Emerging Dublin quartet Odd Morris followed their debut 'What Might Be with 'Lilac Leaves', which still held true to their dark post-punk roots, and fronted by vocalist Daragh Griffin, they have visual style as well as an intriguing sound quality.




JUST MUSTARD

After a debut album and 2019 singles 'Frank', 'October' and 'Seven' in 2019, the Dundalk band have steadily grown in stature. The five-piece are slightly to the left of their Irish compatriots. fusing an electronically indebted shoegaze-esque appeal to waves of distortion. Expect much more in 2020.




V98

Dublin-based alt-punk rock quartet V98 have a feel of Fontaines D.C. about them, but their November debut EP, 'PRESSGANG' showed their own individual delivery through boisterous guitars and lyrical strength. However, there is a lot more to this four-piece that is likely to become a force in 2020.




FONTAINES D.C.

The Dublin post-punks really owned 2019, from the release of their critically-acclaimed debut album 'Dogrel', to sold out tours in both the UK and US. Probably not a lot more to say on them that hasn't be already. They started a trend in early 2018 whuch others have since jumped on, but to lesser effect.




INHALER

Ending the year on the BBC Sound of 2020 longlist, on the rise Dubliners Inhaler are on the brink of going mega. Three singles, including September's ‘Ice Cream Sundae', showcase their way with shimmering indie-rock anthems, and with singer Elijah Hewson, a Bono for the new millennials.
