Track Of The Day :: Nothingheads - Topsy

Credit: Ben Coiacetto

Words: Ellie Ward

You can never have too much scuzzy fuzz seems to be the byword with Nothingheads, who have wrung out almost four minutes-worth of little else on the rather excellent 'Topsy' - out this week.

With a distinctly Berlin bunker sound, the garage punk four-piece - who actually hail from London - layer on an extra coating of doom-laden distortion to create what they describe as "heavy, catchy and motorik with explosions that ripple underneath trying to break out”.

The lyrical inspiration came via Topsy, an elephant who was electrocuted for public amusement in America in 1903. Topsy was executed on Coney Island during a publicity stunt claiming to be part of a scientific demonstration by Thomas Edison, but later revealed to be because she’d killed a spectator who stubbed a cigar out on her trunk.

Not an easy-going subject matter... bit like the song, but both catch the imagination.

You can catch Nothingheads live at The Waiting Room in London this Saturday, December 7.
