Debut from the Brighton Cubs who have been steadily building up a name for themselves over the course of 2013. Big dark drums, big dark riffs (that echo reverberently on endless feedback), big dark vocals (and an equally big vocalist in the nearly 7ft Jamie), all grungy pop is solidified here in an interesting Nirvana-for-today's-youth kind of way. Only three tracks on this EP (it would have been nice to see a fourth, perhaps unheard, track included), but what's here are the Tigerclub live staples. 'Little Rope', all guitar slides and Cobain-intoned vocals and crunchy riffs that could easily be today's Nirvana for the kids who weren't around in the early 90s. In the middle is slotted 'Centrefold', a QOTSA fuzz bass'd number that one could easily imagine Filthy Boy covering with its sleazy vibe. Bringing up the rear is the latest single, 'Mother'. More jangly riffs, though still defined by those deep drumbeats to weight it down. If one dipped into a box of chocolates, Tigerclub would be the nut cluster: sweetly dark melodies on the outside, but take a bite and you get a gritty middle to swirl and crunch on the palate. Yummy.
