Nathaniel Rateliff, has had his songwriting capabilities hailed as both ‘meticulous and startling’ by no less than The New York Times, and the Denver-based artist certainly doesn’t disappoint with the first track from his new project, Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats.
'I Need Never Get Old’, released yesterday (May 12), will bear the iconic logo of Stax Records on its sleeve. The track itself contains the soul that the Memphis label has been known to release in the past. We hear Otis Redding as well as Sam & Dave - the soul greats – as Nathaniel rasps "I said I needed to try/I need never get old" above the chorus of horns giving it a lively, vintage feel. Perhaps this reminds us, more recently, of Mumford and Sons' ‘Babel’ - despite Rateliff’s passion appearing possibly to some, as a little more honestly felt than Marcus Mumford’s...we're saying nothing. Either way, this audacious venture from a folk man to a soul man leaves us feeling obliged to dance around.
Rateliff has a knack of applying the adage of 'leaving us wanting more'. And we won’t have long to wait as the self-titled LP, ‘Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats', will be hitting us late this summer. And based on this, it's not to be missed.
