Shiny Darkly Get Very Dark In A Copenhagen Sex Club

Honestly, what are things coming to. Here we were at Little Indie just about to sit down to lunch, and what drops onto our desk, but a load of Danish sex goings-on and the like. Well, I never; shocked we were. Shocked, I tell you.

The cause of this was that Danish post-punk band Shiny Darkly who have just unveiled their provocative new video for ’Animal Fate’, taken from their forthcoming album Little Earth, released June 8 via Crunchy Frog.

While the lyrical content explores sexual power dynamics, the video takes this theme to its furthest conclusion, depicting the 100% real experience of sub/dom couple in a Copenhagen sex club. Filmed in one continuous shot, the video documents without intervening. It is stylised in a way which censors the most explicit material.

Director Frederik Valentin says: “I wanted to amplify and illustrate the aspect of the lyrics about dominance. It’s a real scene, shot on location. 100% documentary, no orchestration at all. The video is just one take. Actually what you see is the first take I did as entering the club, shot on nightvision with a small handycam to prevent unnecessary attention.”

Frontman Kristoffer Bech says: “Frederik Valentin is a great director and a friend of us. In this video we didn't want to feature ourselves, instead, focus on something realistic, dramatic and even tragic. Like a documentary in some way. The idea arose around a theme on submission, being caught and bossed around in a sexual context. Frederik picked up the ball and ran with it. We're happy with what he came back with. It's beautiful and arty, provocative and kind of scary. And that gels well with the song. Even if the song is not at all about sex."

Next time, Kris, get in on the action, eh?

Shiny Darkly return to the UK for a one-off show at London’s The Waiting Room on June 10. We await to see what takes place amidst the crowd in the room when they play this!
