Introducing :: Frontyards

Words: Linn Branson

You feel you could slide a surf wave - wearing an itsy bitsy, teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini of the 60s era - as you listen to Philadelphia boys Frontyards, who sound very much like they are bygones from another age.

As it is, the five-man outfit - which comprise three identical triplets and a 15-year-old bass player amongst their number - despite all presumably still being in high school, have already recorded their first album , the 12-track 'People That Look Like Their Pets', which came out in March - along with the more recent 'Underwater'.

Formed last year by the three 17-year-old Pignetti brothers, Donato (who also plays in synth pop project, Dream League Soccer), Giancarlo, and Max (who is responsible for coming up with the 'Frontyards' name after the hand was previously known as The Basement Boys), along with long-time friend Franklin, and joined by the young 15-year-old Will, whom they got to know through Facebook friends and basement shows.

The album takes on a curve from jazz guitar style, to synth melodies, spacey rock and back to garage surf. It's a weird mix-up, but strangely works.

Both the album and 'Underwater' - which will feature on a compilation album with Del Sur, Claire Cottrill, Tribute, Wasted America and Bickley, out on June 30 - were self-produced, and recorded, in DIY style, in Donato's bedroom, before being mixed and mastered through Garageband.

Frontyards play Mile High House in Philadelphia on June 6 with Forever Lesbians, and Walla Fest, Philadelphia on August 24.

Frontyards are: Max Pignetti - vocals/guitar/keyboard, Giancarlo Pignetti - bass/keyboard/vocals, Will McGoran - bass, Franklin Mostoller - guitar, Donato Pignetti - drums, percussion.
