New Sounds #28 1/2/16

FAROE - BLAST
Solo project of Corentin Ollivier (of French outfit Concrete Knives), who released debut EP ‘Words’ on January 22 via Bella Union. This lead track has already been streamed over 19k times on Soundcloud. Intimate, minimalist, building in intensity with electronic textures. Star rating: ****/5

HIGH HIGHS - HOW COULD YOU KNOW
Australia via Brooklyn indie-pop duo release their new LP 'Cascades' on February 5 through PIAS. Sharp, shiny with dreamy guitar lines and synths and incandescent harmonies. Star rating: ***.5/5

MORE ICE AND HONEY - DAUGHTER
London-based multi-national collective who met while studying at UCL, fronted by vocalist Natalie Grefenstette (French/American), guitarist Ivan Isakov (Russian), pianist Gwijde Maegherman (Hungarian/Belgian), trumpeter Max Fagandini (British/Italian), percussionist Charlie Egan (British) and cellist Otto Nuoranne (Finnish), and Sara Foitova (Czech), who supplied synth on this track - one of two they are releasing simultaneously. A meeting of genres from jazzy harmonies to alt-folk and Latin influences, with soul vocals supplied by Grefenstette. Their debut album, 'Where To Begin', released on February 29, was funded through a successful Kickstarter campaign. Star rating: ***/5

LIFE - POPULAR MUSIC
Doing it for the North-East, the Hull punks channel their Sex Pistols snarls and sneers on this rip-roaring fierce-fest of a new single. Catch their live show next when they embark on next UK tour in March. Star rating: ****/5

BEACH BABY - SLEEPERHEAD
Following 'No Mind No Money', 'U R' and 'Limousine', this latest single (produced by Adam Jaffrey - Bloc Party, Dev Hynes) - is out on March 11 via Handsome Dad. Described by band as a “semi-ironic, slightly bitter ode to a simple, traditional life...about exhaustion, discontent and, ultimately, escapism,” its driving, catchy rhythm, big chorus and indie pop harmonies ensure another winner for the London quartet. Star rating: ***/5
