New Sounds #48 April 23 2016

ISLANDS - NO MILK, NO SUGAR
The Toronto quartet herald not one, but two full-lengths dropping simultaneously on May 13 - 'Taste', 'Should I Remain Here, At Sea' - with an hors d'oeuvre of the former by way of this electronic disco-esque track of rippling synths and pounding beats. Star rating: ***.5/5

STILL CHANGING - WE DON'T UNDERSTAND
The Norwegian four-piece share new alt-rock single of catchy pop melodies, kicking drums and rolling bass. Star rating: ***/5

IN DRIFT - WISE IN TIME
Latest single from Toronto dreampop five-piece. Courtney Hutcheson's vocals ride delectably over a surf-rock melody. Star rating: ***/5

DENTIST - AWFUL
New single from New Jersey fuzzy garage four-piece, taken from their forthcoming second album 'Ceilings', released on June 24. Their garage surf sound is helmed by Emily Bornemann's vocals over an infectious melody. Star rating: ***.5/5

SPINE OF MAN - VAMPIRES
The second single from the Copenhagen dreampop band's upcoming EP 'Cape Cod'. Dreamy, atmospheric soundscape that tells lyrically of vampires and humanizes them, and effective vocals by Alexander Støvelbæk. Star rating: ****/5
