Track Of The Day :: Zola Blood - Heartbeat
Words: Alison Mack
In my review of London Hackneyites Zola Blood's debut EP two years ago, I remarked their ability - more vocally than in the synthetic electronica component - as being a little too clinical and detached for one to gain a closeness to.
Maybe the quartet have taken this on board, or just broadening out and working through their music's pulse, as 'Heartbeat' - the first single from their forthcoming debut album 'Infinite Games' - is quite a pleasing progression.
Produced by Zola Blood and mixed by David Oversby-Powell (Fyfe, Shura), ‘Heartbeat’ blends layers of dark, rich percussion and analogue synths, with the futuristic elements complemented by Hang drums and atmospheric acoustic guitars that work in complex and complementary rhythms. 'Heartbeat' has my heart.
