New Sounds #74 July 14 2016
PLUM - DEAD LEG
Sydney's Caleb Jacobs - and Julia Why? guitarist - has unveiled this new synthwave tune from his dreampop side project, which is out now on Turktown Records. Reverbed lo-fi vocals layered over dreamy, washed-out synths. Star rating: 3/5
LE GOÛT ACIDE DES CONSERVATEURS - HOT ROD
Their name - translated as "The acid taste of preservatives"- may be somewhat unwieldy, but fortunately this new French trio based in Normandy, who formed last year, kick off their debut single with a short and sweet title. Taken from the EP 'Vision', out on July 22 on Soundress, they combine the noise of Sonic Youth crossed with the krautrock of Neu! or Kraftwerk in an experimental four-minute working, helmed by bassist Frédérique Lelias-Louvat post-punk vocals. Star rating: 4/5
MOTHERS - EASY AS POSSIBLE
Athens, Georgia quartet released their debut album, 'When You Walk A Long Distance You Are Tired', in February, but are now putting out a digital-only deluxe version of it on July 29 through Wichita, with this bonus track. A lo-fi lullaby, with Kristine Leschper's far-reaching croon delivered over deftly plucked strings. Catch in the UK at The Lexington in London on August 17. Star rating: 3.5/5
THE BY GODS - PHONE CALLS
Title hook-laden garage-pop track from the Nashville band's second EP of the year, released this week. Recorded by Mike Purcell (Lees Of Memory, Hurts To Laugh), it follows their second full-length 'Get On Feelings' that came out in January. Star rating: 3.5/5
EMMA LOUISE - UNDERFLOW
From the new album 'Supercry' released last week by the Brisbane sultry-vocalled songstress. “I put my white flag in the wind, to let love know I’m giving in”, the alt-pop chanteuse sings on this first cut from the 11-track album, produced with Pascal Gabriel (Goldfrapp, Ladyhawke). Star rating: 4/5
