New Sounds #79 July 31 2016

BIG EYES - BEHIND YOUR EYES
New from the Brooklyn outfit comes the second single from their upcoming LP, 'Stake My Claim', out August 19 via Don Giovanni Records. Singer Kait Eldridge says of the power-punk track with pop lashings: “'Behind Your Eyes' is about seeing through the facade of someone who acts as if 'everything is cool' when it’s clear that they’re hurting. It’s about feeling a major connection with someone, but knowing that it would never be a good fit. It’s about finding the balance between emotion and logic." Star rating: ★★★☆

WILD MEADOWS - REBEL
Melbourne shoegazers follow last year's self-titled debut EP with this just under five minute latest cut of atmospheric psych reverb crossed with shoegaze vibes and Kat Karamitros' lo-fi vocals gilding the top. Star rating: ★★

BELLE GAME - YUH
The first new material from the Vancouver quartet since 'Ritual Tradition Habit' in 2013, released last week via Arts & Crafts. Produced by Dave Hamelin (formerly of The Stills) and executive produced by Broken Social Scene’s Kevin Drew, the 'crush pop' dubbed track has a haunting soundscape that is carried by the synth underpinning and Andrea Lo's vocals. Star rating: ★★★

RAINBOW CHAN - WORK
Sydney artist brings her combination of 90s electronica, Asian pop and experimental sounds to this new single, taken from her debut album 'Spacings' which is released on August 26 via Silo Arts & Records. Lightly interspersed synth over dulcet voice and layered percussion with house stylings. Star rating: ★★★★☆

NEXT EX - HEY GIRL (SELF-CONSCIOUS TALK)
Released last week, the debut single from the new Romanian pop-electronica trio: Andrea Sofronie, Robert Iulian Acsintoaie and Sergiu Stanciu. Taken from their forthcoming debut album, the track's trap-pop leanings are complemented by Sofronie's effective vocal delivery. Star rating: ★★★
