New Sounds #86 August 21 2016

COURTSHIP - STOP FOR NOTHING
Los Angeles-based duo - Eli Hirsch (DREAMERS, Ethan Burns) and Micah Gordon (Tobias Jesso Jr.) - share their debut single - written and produced in Gordon’s bedroom. Glossy, slick synthpop with bursting exuberant chorus. Listenable, though nothing that hasn't been heard before. Star rating: ★★

HONEY LUNG - SOMETHING
The London trio merge blistering grunge rock with melodic pop undertones and rampant guitars on this first track from their debut EP due later this year on RYP Recordings. Star rating: ★★★

SYKES - GLIMMER
From EP 'Younger Mind' - out now - the south-London alt pop outfit blend upbeat guitars with catchy pop melodies, as keys player Julia Sykes offers as an opening: "I would crawl towards something I like / I know I want it but the ink’s still running / I would hold onto stories untold / I was sick of nobody". Star rating: ★★

DELORENTOS - FITS (TOO DRUNK TO DRIVE)
From the upcoming fifth album 'Night Becomes Light’ by the Dublin alt-rock four-piece, out on September 2 (although appears to have already had a release of sorts two years ago). It's the kind of stadium sound that the Irish do well, but as this band have been around for 12 years or more, perhaps not the one to make them a household name. Star rating: ★★

RICHARD WALTERS - U
New single from his fourth LP, 'A.M' (out October 14 via Pilotlights Music) sees Walters (Liu Bei) once again applying ethereal vocals to emotional and irresistible melodies via piano and stirring strings over four minutes. Star rating: ★★★
