New Sounds #87 August 23 2016

FRANCOBOLLO - KINKY LOLA
We don't know just how 'kinky' this Lola is, but the London-based Swedes' newest single, produced by Charlie Andrew (Alt-J, Marika Hackman) and the first release on his new Square Leg Records label, is a warped and completely different and absorbing a track as you'll get. Simon Nilsson's abrasive, yet hypnotic, vocal works over all manner of experimental guitar sounds and a stirring rhythm section. Star rating: ★★★★

THE GLASS CHILDREN - DO WELL
London-based noir electronic duo's - David Fairweather (synths and vocals) and Daniella Kleovoulou (vocals) - have been delivering these enigmatic releases for awhile now, and this latest foray into synth-driven 80s-influenced sounds, is no less a haunting four minute trip, given added momentum by their combination of synthetic and organic textures. Star rating: ★★

EVENING HYMNS - NORTHERN ARM
Canadian artist Jonas Bonnetta has cornered the market in homespun, emotively fragrant lyric writing, and this new single from the Ontario-based singer (out through Tin Angel) travels at a leisurely but affecting dreampop pace that draws the listener in. Over in the UK next month, catch live at The Tin at The Coal Vaults, Coventry on September 23, and the night after at London's Shacklewell Arms. Star rating: ★★

JACUZZI BOYS - BOYS LIKE BLOOD
Taken from their fourth album, 'Ping Pong', out on October 21 via their own Mag Mag label, the Miami rockers go for a punchy, scuzzy garage vibe as they delve into those boy/girl problems of "girls like love / boys like blood." Star rating: ★★

FROST - BETTER OFF LONELY

Following last year's debut 'Dreaming', this is the second single from Sydney-based producer Nick Frost. Taken from his debut EP released last week, it features Brett Hite of Frenship on vocals, and hones dancefloor ready grooves in a similar vein to Disclosure. Star rating: ★★
