New Sounds #96 September 14 2016

THE OCELOTS - LOVER I NEED YOU
Teenage twin brothers from Wexford, Ireland, Ashley and Brandon Watson, offer a glimpse of their forthcoming debut EP with this acoustic indie-folk taster. Star rating: ★★

THE PERSIAN LEAPS - THE WEATHER
Second single from the new EP, 'Your City, Underwater', out this Friday.  A cheery tale of impending climate doom with hooky harmonies from the St. Paul, MN power pop/indie rock trio. Star rating: ★★

THE AWAY DAYS - WORLD HORIZON
Really not at all sure we have a clue what this song is about - to wit, "For all those broken tones of lawn/A story of the man who cried wolf/You know it’s really hard to feel/When lovables may not be here". It may well be a Turkish-English translation problem, but its dreamy melodic essence surpasses the 'lawn' matter. Released on September 30 via Pasaj Muzik. Star rating: ★★

MARLON BRANDO ISLAND - CIRCLE OF THROATS
One of several tracks uploaded by new East London three-piece, who describe themselves as "playing loud guitar music" and "trying to write about difficult subject matter and make that subject matter accessible under the veil of a pop song". A rather curious alt-post-punk-pop hybrid, judging by the tracks - which are all quite different - with an experimental edge at times too. A potential grower of a band. Star rating: ★★

IMPERIAL BROADS - YOU'RE SCARED
Debut single released at end of last month from Sydney-based garage-pop-punk quartet (three guitar 'broads' and one bloke: Pip Smith (vocals/guitar), Lauren Crew (bass/ vocals), Eve Lande (guitar/vocals), Nick Kennedy (drums) - taken from their upcoming first album, 'Who Are We Turning Into?' out on November 4, and produced and mixed by Liam Judson. Star rating:  ★★
