New Sounds #100 October 1 2016
THE ALPACAS - CAB FARE
We featured the Ontario outfit back in August as our Track Of The Day with 'Wax'. Now they offer a new cut, of punchy beat and dirt guitars, off their forthcoming debut album 'The Best Is Behind You' (produced, engineered, and mixed by Kevin Dietz (The Cranberries, Alexisonfire, Placebo), out October 14 on Willow Music. The band describe it as about “the end of a night out with your friends. Knowing that things in life need to change, although a big part of you wants them to stay the same. It's a very twenty-something thought, but we felt compelled to document it. Plus, late night themes just go great with that guitar riff.” Star rating: ★★★☆☆
CAPE CUB - LIFELINE
From the second EP '6am' out on October 21, from Chad Male, once again produced by Cam Blackwood
'Lifeline' comes to life with pulsing electronics, lush guitars and shimmering synth riffs and an alt-folk stylised vocal. Of the track Chad says: "This is me saying 'things don't feel too good right now, I don't even know what's going on, but without you it'd be so much worse'." Catch live on October 9 at Twisterella Festival, Middlesbrough. Star rating: ★★★★☆
PATIENCE - THE PRESSURE
Veronica Falls frontwoman Roxanne Clifford offers her solo project here, out on Glasgow's Night School Records. The follow-up to her June debut 'The Church' marries 80s styled fluttering synths over layers of strong hooks, catchy lyrics, and icy electronics. Star rating: ★★★☆☆
THE JIM MITCHELLS - YOU UNFOLLOW ME
We don't think this was penned as a social comment about Twitter, the single cut from the debut EP, 'Planet Absorbed' on Third Eye Stimuli Records from Sydney's solo Mitchell, who we last featured here in March with 'Planet Absorbed'. Lots of psychedelic trippy grooves oozing a 70s retro sound. Star rating: ★★★☆☆
TEAM PICTURE - CLASSIC:M
Released September 23, Leeds alt-rockers follow debut 'Birthday Blues' with a relentlessly punishing, yet quite stupendous, two-and-a-half-minute blast of full throttle psych rock, that sounds both exciting yet ominous in a totally good way. Catch live at Leeds' Brudenell Social Club on October 12. Star rating: ★★★★★
