Track Of The Day :: Self Talk - Untitled
Words: Ellie Ward
Described as writing 'punchy pop rock', Melbourne five-piece Self Talk do just about that. And new single 'Untitled' - which follows previous singles 'Hypocrite' and 'Clean Washing' - a guaranteed earworm of a song, is about the best. This is the on-repeat track of the week.
Taken from their June debut EP, 'Seeing What I Want To See', the scrappy, delightful track starts off simply on strummed guitar and Stacey Cicivelli's vocals, but it's not long before fortifying guitars, punchy percussion and a synth line enter to build the track - and have you singing along before even half-way through.
Joel Williams' animated video clip sets the raw lyrics of endings and letting go ("And I can't forget about the way you said it with your lips pursed / And I can't forget about the way you were too shy to go first / And I can't forget about the way you said you felt trapped in these sheets") against the seeming mundanity of walking home alone - a time when the truths you've been hiding from can sneak up on you. The clip quite literally rolls the credits on the story it tells.
Self Talk embark on a co-headline tour with Paper Thin this week in Oz, kicking off on Friday, December 2 (check their FACEBOOK for dates).
