Track Of The Day :: TUSK - Matter Of Time

Words: Izzy B

TUSK. Tsk. Tsk. This alt-rock five-piece from Nottingham have a good look (definite eye candy for the girls), make classy vids (watch below), have some appealing tunes (well, if this debut single is anything to go by, which follows last year's first recorded track, 'Dull Ache'), so the planets should all be alignment, right? Well....

Produced by Rob Milton and mixed by Monkey Gun, 'Matter of Time', released on November 3 through Strataville, is a vibrant, energetic entrance and the visuals give an idea of their live presence. Yet, a gripe here - and a purely subjective one - is that I don't feel the vocal complements the TUSK sound.

It's not a bad voice, that of Ned Jones, the beholder, don't get me wrong (I bet he can belt out a soul classic like nobody's business). It's just in those deep baritone tones it feels out of place against the jangly guitar riffs and backing.

Listen to the opening to see what I mean. You aren't expecting that kind of voice to come in, are you? When he goes up a register on the chorus, it sounds much better - to these ears anyhow.

However, I think it may well grow on me, the voice. Just a matter of time, probably. TUSK have me hooked with the rest.

TUSK play an in-store at Rough Trade in Nottingham on November 3.

TUSK are: Ned Jones - vocals
Seb Doyle - guitar, Alex Perry - guitar, Jamie Irving - bass, Jack Gray - drums
