Introducing / Track Of The Day :: The Keep Cats - I Don't Get It
Words: Linn Branson
It is always interesting to spot young talent coming up, watching as they grow both on maturity and sound. In the case of The Keep Cats - none of whom are yet old enough to vote - a couple of early YouTube videos from 2016 when they were aged around 14, show how they have been working on their sound since then.
Formed by brothers Jonah (aged 15) and Eden (16) Parnell when at school in Brighton, with fellow members Fin (16) and Louis (15), they are now based in Guildford, Surrey - where all are still in full-time education, working in gigs and rehearsing around their school schedule. They have already opened for BLOXX, Trudy and the Romance and The RPMs, and played Reading's Are You Listening? festival last year.
Describing themselves as "indie, sometimes pop, sometimes more punky; like we've time-travelled from the 90s with a splash of now", their debut single, 'I Don't Get It', self-released just before Christmas, has something of a brooding side to it, balanced by more upbeat melodies - and some very nice guitar work. It's a head-nodder, and probably one to work itself into your consciousness quietly.
A band worth keeping your sights on.
The Keep Cats play Rising Sun Arts Centre in Reading on February 3 forIndependent Venue Week.
The Keep Cats are: Jonah Parnell (vocals, lead guitar), Eden Parnell (bass, vocals), Fin Stuttard (guitar), Louis Relf (drums)
