Sing & Tell :: Creeping Jean

The Brighton-based two-piece opened the year with 'White Tambourine', their follow up to debut single, the nod-along, catchy 60s-esque number ‘Honey In The Sun’, released in 2017, and have already brought out yet another new number, 'Stick Around Me'.

Who are you?

I'm Joe Habberfield, vocals and keys for Creeping Jean. Oliver Tooze is the other half of the sucker punch and he plays guitar and does lead vocal. The rest of the band are session musicians all the writing recording etc is just us!

Tell us something about yourself and how you came to be where you are today?

I'm from Kent and Oliver's from
Sheffield, we both met in Brighton. We are both outgoing and don't take things to seriously; having a laugh, enjoying this processing of attacking the music industry, it not becoming a chore or causing to much stress has got us where we are today with playing music.

Give us an idea of your musical style and influences.

It's very mid-60s influenced with the pop melodies as we enjoy such vocalists as Carl Wilson and Harry Nilsson's side of singing, but we do exploit riffs and certain shapes of playing our instruments that would be seen in T-Rex or a Deep Purple outfit, especially the way I play the keys.

Explain the production and writing process behind your songs.

Oliver will work on a melody then stretch each lyric to give you that easy hook to sing right through the track. The music is important throughout. You gotta keep things interesting, so certain riffs, tones and movements we feel we have to keep rotating in our music.

Tell us a little about your new single.

'Stick Around Me' is a song inspired by Harry Nilsson's puppy song. Ol bought a puppy called Stanley and wrote 'Stick Around Me'.

Can we catch up with you at any forthcoming live shows?

We play The Hope & Ruin in Brighton on March 3, and Nambucca, London on March 10, both for This Feeling. We are also playing The Great Escape in May.

How's the rest of the year looking, plans-wise?

We're back in the studio constantly this year and we're definitely going to keep giving our all at stronger music.

Where can we hear more of your music?

We will be dropping more singles over the next months, to be found on Spotify, iTunes, etc.

What social media platforms can we find you on?
