Introducing :: Essex alt-indie rockers - Suspects

Words: Gavin Watson

After winning a place to open up Camden Rocks Festival main stage in London on June 2, Essex alt-indie rockers Suspects have moved up a notch since I last checked in with them over 18 months ago.

And it’s been an eventful time, to say the least. For starters, the Chelmsford-based four-piece have become five, in the shape of the arrival of Reece Hall on guitar joining Max, Tom, Jon and Nathan.

Regular local gigs culminated in the band being crowned “Best Undiscovered Band Essex 2018”, but that “undiscovered” tag may soon have to go as they gig further afield. They’ve made some serious headway into the London scene, first playing, then later headlining, London’s legendary Dublin Castle.

But most notably, just a few weeks after supporting Rat Boy at an opening of a Dr Martens store in Chelmsford, they were asked for a repeat performance, this time opening up for him at the 5000 capacity Brixton Academy.

That Rat Boy connection is maintained in the shape of drummer Noah Booth who produced 'City I Live In', their single and EP of the same name. The video, directed and edited by Kai Newton, has the skateboard chic clad band put in an energetic performance against an urban backdrop, with a catchy chorus that they must’ve had goosebumps hearing sung back at them by the Brixton crowd.

The tracks 'Wake Up', 'No Sun' and 'What Did You Expect' make up the rest of the just released four-track EP. With some choice gigs ahead, as playing Camden Rocks with the likes of Maxïmo Park and Public Image Limited, the next 18 months look like they will be just as eventful.
