DEAF reveal 'Truancy' visuals with character from previous once more featuring in sequel

Words: Linn Branson

Earlier this month Wellington, New Zealand post-punks DEAF unveiled the 'first part' of their monochrome video pair, with 'Shards'. Now they follow with it's sequel, 'Truancy', again directed by James Henley and DEAF bassist Hayden Ellis.

Where the visuals for 'Shards' took our lead character in cowboy hat to a fancy dress house party, on 'Truancy' we become involved in his developing romantic space - plenty of smooching to be had here! - until the end turns into something... well, watch and see.

"We wanted to make something that was simultaneously romantic and twitching with anxiety: a "meet-cute" that looked like film noir or expressionist horror," say the band. "If 'Shards' is about feeling out of place in a social situation, 'Truancy' is about the uncertain thrill of newfound intimacy, and losing one's self in the moment."

As with all DEAF's work, visual and recorded, it's gripping and intriguing. Both songs feature on their debut record, 'The DEAF EP', out on October 31.
