Track Of The Day :: oh800 - Melanin

Words: Ellie Ward

Last month electro-punk outfit oh800 dropped 'I Want You Around', now they have another up their sleeve, and also from their forthcoming debut album 'Character Building', out October 12 via Infinite Jest Records.

Talking about 'Melanin', frontman Eoin Rooney says "the lyrics came after a young black kid was killed by a police officer in our area of London. The officer thought he swallowed a suspicious package and chased him down. You know the rest... Meanwhile on the same streets, middle class white people walk around every weekend with suspicious packages in their pockets, suspicion free. That pisses me off. So I wrote a song about it.”

For a somewhat weighty issue song lyrics wise, 'Melanin' is surprisingly light melodically. Filled with a funky groove beat, and jangling guitar, frontman Eoin Rooney’s colloquial lead vocal reaches out effortlessly, in a manner employed by LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy, to complete the package.
