Now in its 17th year, the list showcases 2019's hottest new artists, with the focus this year on solo acts, with only Sea Girls making the top 10. Nominees were chosen by 136 critics, DJs and broadcasters, including former nominees Ellie Goulding and Stormzy.
The top five will be revealed in January on Radio 1, with one artist announced each day from Monday January 7. The winner will be revealed on Friday January 11.
This post will be updated with the final five in January as announced.
5TH ROSALÍA
Melding traditional flamenco melodies and palmas (hand-clapping) with the crisp beats and electronic basslines of trap, Catalan artist Rosalía Vila Tobella's second album, 'El Mal Querer', earned her five nominations at the Latin Grammys, with single 'Malamente' taking best alternative song and best urban track.
4TH SLOWTHAI
Tyron Frampton - aka slowthai - the 24-year-old from Northampton, delivers rap woven around intricate wordplay and observations on British life.
3RD GRACE CARTER
The London-based singer-songwriter, originally from Brighton, blends piano-led pop with searingly personal lyrics.
2ND KING PRINCESS
Brooklyn teen prodigy Mikaela Straus only released her debut single, '1950', in February last year but it’s already been streamed 166m times on Spotify.
Signed to Mark Ronson’s Zelig label, she has been described as a “pop icon for the next generation of queer youth”.
WINNER OCTAVIAN
French-born, London-based genre-defying rapper Oliver “Octavian” Godji won a scholarship to the Brit School – but became disillusioned by the institution, saying “I don’t believe you can teach someone to be creative”.
Despite spending some of his teenage years homeless, he continued to make music and had a viral hit last year with the single 'Party Here'.
