With Dublin's Fontaines D.C. being one of the hottest bands around right now, they look to positively be on fire with their upcoming debut album 'Dogrel' due next month (April 12 via Partisan).
As they head to Texas to blow our friends across the Pond away at SXSW (and also at two sold out shows at NYC’s Union Pool on March 7 + 8), they have unleashed another single from the said LP, 'Roy’s Tune', which follows the more raucous 'Big' and last year's 'Too Real'.
The song was written by guitarist Conor Curley.
"It’s sung to Ireland – from a mindset of frustration, depression, and a loss of innocence," he relates. "A couple years back the EU awarded Ireland €14 billion in back taxes from Apple, but the government here refuses to do anything with the money out of fear Apple will move their headquarters. They care more about a giant corporation than the people of our country, and all we can do is sit there and take it. We wanted this to be a moment of reflection on the album. We included this song with the purpose of showing our intent as a band and as songwriters. We intend to explore whatever emotions or ideas we see, not just make ‘another post-punk album'."
The reflective, poignant track is partnered with a video, written and directed by Liam Papadachi, and starring Dafhyd Flynn, the lead actor in last year’s Best Film winner at the IFTA (Irish Film and Television Academy) awards, Michael Inside. It is a quiet and soulful portrayal of a day in the life of a young family, struggling to make ends meet, and coming to terms with how their lives have now changed after the birth of their baby girl. It's a poignant and gentle ode to perseverance (or ‘hanging on’).
