Formed last October, effervescent, jangly dance-rock four-piece Pillarbox, who hail from Adelaide, Australia, and are making their debut with 'The Only One'.
Who are you?
I am Anthony Ciccarello, the bassist for Pillarbox, I work with Michael Clarke (drummer), Josh Huxtable (guitarist, songwriter) and Nicolas Perrotta (vocals).
Tell us something about yourself and how you came to be where you are today.
We are an Adelaide-based band who have been together in some version or another for around four years now. Only recently have we released music and started gigging consistently though. Michael and Josh started the idea for an indie rock band in uni, Michael knew me from a previous band and got me in as the bassist. We started jamming and writing together and decided that we needed a singer to progress to the next stage of the band, so we got Nic in.
Give us an idea of your musical style and influences.
Some influences for this band include The Last Dinosaurs, The Wombats, Arctic Monkeys, Boy Pablo, Charlie Puth, and there are a bunch of other bands and genres that have influenced our tastes individually.
Explain the production and writing process behind your songs.
Josh writes pretty much all the ideas for a song, he brings them to the the band and we jam on it a couple of times and each pitch in, really refining the flavour of Pillarbox. When we feel confident with the song, we head into the studio with Rhys Williams (our producer) and record all the parts. Rhys and I then mix the songs, adding what we need to and cross checking with the rest of the band so that we end up with a finished product we're all happy with.
Tell us a little about your new single.
'The Only One' is our first single, and it's a very 'dancey' or 'party' oriented style of song. Big group vocals in the chorus, and catchy riffs throughout. The songs breaks character for a bridge/solo part where the feel moves to 6/8, the progression becomes a lot darker and Nic really lets loose on a few of the lines.
Can we catch up with you at any forthcoming live shows?
We have a single launch for The Only One lined up in early May that is yet to be announced, and another gig at The Exeter, mid-May
How's the year looking, plans-wise?
We plan to keep recording and creating new content with the eventual goal an EP. We'll supplement this with gigs as we feel live is where our music and energy really shines.
Where can we hear more of your music?
So far, 'The Only One' is our only released song, but you can catch us at our gigs to hear far more originals!
