Manchester's Maruja drop new EP 'Compassion'
Words: Tom Cheetham
Manchester's Maruja have just released their new EP, aptly titled ‘Compassion’.
The seven-track record - streaming online below - encompasses the band's musical style, with philosophical lyrics, such as the ones appearing on songs ‘Relax and love’ and ‘People Please’, appealing towards the softer side of human nature.
However, don’t be fooled by these tender lyrics as Maruja’s energetic and distinguishable sound provides a high-energy beat and a groove that bares similarities to funk and soul as well as frantic, psychedelic guitar solos from guitarist Liam Laurence. Harry Wilkinson’s vocal work on this EP continues to amaze, boasting an ever-expanding range of pitch and rhythm which is vital to the band's detectable style.
This EP is further proof that Maruja are a band worth keeping an eye on, having been tipped by Clint Boon, Insipiral Carpets member and XS Manchester DJ, to be ‘the next big thing from Manchester’.
Maruja play a headline show at Aatma in Manchester on September 21.
