Interview :: Talkboy give the lowdown on their upwards rise, new EP and more new tings a-coming

Words: Matt Taylor

We recently heard from Leeds' indie rock sextet Talkboy with 'All Works Out', their latest single wbuch arrives ahead of their debut EP, and their BBC Introducing stage appearance at Reading & Leeds next weekend.

It's all too common to see a band collapse under their own gravitation attraction to hype, Talkboy, on the other hand, are on the cusp of taking the hype and formulating their own stardom. Their latest single undeniably shows Talkboy’s trajectory is heading one way: upwards.

I caught up with the band's guitarist Tim Malkin for a few quick questions on their their incredible summer so far.

Your new record ‘All Works Out’ has been out for a couple of weeks now. How have you found the response so far?

The response has been great for sure. We’ve had this song for a little while now so it’s good to get it out there finally and hear what people think.

What was inspiration there?

It’s hard to say without making myself cringe but, for better or worse, between the band members, we all know a lot of each others business. When the lyrics were being written a few of the members were going through break ups from relationships that probably weren’t too great for them. It’s pretty much just saying that if you want to have a beer and hear someone tell you you’re great, just gimme a bell.

Were there any particular influences?

As I said before, we had this song for a while before it was released, so it’s hard to remember specific stuff. I think it was around the time we all got into the first Car Seat Headrest album and I had my rediscovering of the Stones, not that they weren’t always there, just that at that time I got particularly obsessed with the late 60s/early 70s stuff they did.

You’ve been working with the skilful Mickey Dale for a while now. What is it about his style that clearly works well for you guys?

Coffee, curry and gin - in that order. Mickey really is a great guy and does a lot for the North Yorkshire music scene for sure. We are the first to admit that we have a lot of rather big egos in the band and he does a good job of keeping them in check - he also has a tiny little Jaymar piano, which is very hard not to put all the way through every song.

'All Works Out' is your fifth single release, do you have any plans for an upcoming album? If so, are you able to tell us when we can expect to see it?

We have plans for an EP - all going according to plan that should be out around mid November. After that, we are trying to work out the best way to get the next set of songs out. We would love to do an album but understand how much of a big deal your first album is. I think the general consensus is that if we were going to do it, we would want to be in a position where it could be the absolute best it could be.

So far this summer you’ve played some amazing gigs, such as Bluedot, Beyond The Woods and Y Not. What is that electrifying feeling of jumping on stage and looking out to a sea of people immersed in your music like?

It really is hard to describe. It just fills you up completely: you get off stage and it really does feel like you’ve been playing for about half a song. I still think there are very few things better than a festival in the sun  - very important - so having the privilege of being able to play at them is something I am very proud of.

Do you have other appearances lined up after Reading/Leeds?

Reading and Leeds we are obviously very excited about, and then we have a headline show at the 02 Islington Academy 2 on 11th September. And - not to be that guy because I hate this guy that I’m about to be but - we do have some dates that are in the process of being confirmed. It’s not this big smoke and mirrors thing to hype it up it’s just that, if I’ve learnt anything from this music/band stuff it is that, until it is beyond certain and you have it in black and white before your very eyes, it is not happening, and even then, it still might not happen. Hopefully, it will though. Keep your eyes peeled on big things to be announced soon!
