Best new tracks Down Under #11

With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.

PRETTY UGLYS - SOAK IT UP

Busselton, WA-based alt-rock trio Pretty Uglys recently brought out this new jangly, surf-rock offering, fusing layered guitars with infectious melodies. "'Soak It Up' is the single we are putting out off our upcoming EP called 'Party Friends'," say the band. "The track basically revolves around the theme of trying not to get caught up in things which are filled with negativity, more specifically the news on TV which is filled with it. Instead enjoying the finer and simple things in life like soaking up the sun with friends sipping on lime and rum."

MULHOLLAND BLOND - DREAMS

Sydney-based Max Wilkinson, aka Mulholland Blond, delves into a blend of alt-pop and r&b with this new single of seductive vocals and smooth guitar riffs. “When writing ‘Dreams’, I wanted to explore the passion and almost tragic sense of longing felt after an intimate moment with someone in a dream. I’m intrigued by the idea that we can subconsciously 'share' such a personal moment with someone just out of reach which can in turn affect and heighten our desire for affection or physical interaction.”

QUIVERS - VIDEOSTORES

Produced by Matthew Redlich, Melbourne dream-pop quartet Quivers usher in a range of compelling instrumentation and lush textures on this four and a half minute work, about "the fear of falling for someone paired with the relief of giving in. It’s a strange time in history now that you can be nostalgic for horses as well as payphones and videostores. You can long for everything from before, while also longing for whatever might come next. This song is for when you realise you’re in deep with someone, but are pretending you aren’t.”

THE SUNDAY ESTATE - GIVE ME (SOMETHING)

The Sydney five-piece share this latest track, described as their "most minimal, meaning we really tried hard to make sure all the elements in it and performances were as strong as possible," their first of the year. The song, produced by Ryan K Brennan (King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Julia Jacklin), about "being in a relationship and how no matter how much you fight with someone you can never want to let them go," is a rolling, is augmented by Conor O’Reilly’s fine vocal lead.

Brisbane psych-pop outfit drop their retrospective, melancholic synth-led new single. Blending psychedelia with progressive rock, on this, their second release, it follows last autumn's debut, 'Easy For You'. “It’s a song about relationships and love, in today’s sometimes confusing dating landscape,” say the quartet.
