Cumbrian band Springfield Sing & Tell on their "indie banger" 'Liquorice' and more

Cumbrian five-piece Springfield (who include the twin Pritchard brothers) have just released their third single, 'Liquorice'. Originally starting out as The Scene, they changed their name - stemming from where they used to practise, Springfield Gardens - and have gone on to release their debut EP 'Inside Jokes' in 2018, and play across the UK in 2019.

Who are you?

I’m Rhys Pritchard, I take care of lead vocals, rhythm guitar and keyboards in Springfield. The other members of the band are Lewis Pritchard on backing vocals and lead guitar; Ben Tucker on backing vocals and bass; Ellis Ferguson, keyboards, and Mitchell Sloan, who handles drums and percussion.

Tell us something about yourself and how you came to be where you are today.

We’re based in Whitehaven in Cumbria. We’ve grafted at this for over 3 years now, up and down the country. It’s hard, but we’ve lived every minute of it and continue to do so.

Give us an idea of your musical style and influences.

I’d call our style alt-indie. We like having raw guitars with synthesisers. Our inspirations come from artists like Tame Impala, Bloc Party, Otherkin and Vistas.

Explain the production and writing process behind your songs.

I write our songs at home. either on my guitar or keyboard, it varies. Sometimes I just write the rhythm guitar and vocals basically at the same time and record them on my phone, sometimes I write a lot of parts and record them as a demo on my laptop in garage band. The songs always change once I bring them to the band and the lads add their own touches. I start the idea and write the lyrics, but the finished product is definitely a joint effort.

The tracks are recorded and produced at St Helens with the production duo SugarHouse. They’re honest with their feedback on songs and advice us on what would sound better or what the song needs, etc. They do amazing work for all of the bands they work with, including us.

Tell us a little about your new single.

Our new single 'Liquorice' we released on March 6th. It’s 100% our best single yet. It’s a song about wanting someone you can’t have, pretty relatable for most people. Short and sweet, an indie banger - if I do say so myself! We’re really proud of it. We’ve gained support from Liverpool FC on Spotify being added to their official playlist with 34,000 listeners.

Can we catch up with you at any forthcoming live shows?

We play at Off The Square in Manchester on April 4th for This Feeling, with Al Moses and Rolla. We’d love to see as many people there as possible! This Feeling have showed us support by adding us to their best new bands playlists on Spotify and Deezer.

How's the first year of the new decade looking, plans-wise?

It’s looking great for us: new single just released, back in the studio in April to record the next, our first appearance at our home festival Kendal Calling, the list goes on. It’s gonna be a great year for Springfield.

Where can we hear more of your music?

All of our music is available on all streaming platforms. We’re back in the studio in the middle of April, which means another single should hopefully be out June/July time.

What social media platforms can we find you on?
