Cat Ryan take papal inspiration for 'Blessed Through The TV'

Newcastle-based art-rockgaze trio Cat Ryan came our way back in March with 'Mannerism'. Now they return with follow-up 'Blessed Through The TV'.

The track, which combines the experimental use of a Japanese Koto (a plucked-stringed instrument) alongside electronic keyboards and programmed percussion and live drums, creates an infectiously quirky, off-kilter fusion of sounds.

Lyrically, however, the song deals with the theme of half-heartedness, the state betwixt abandonment and commitment, and for which The Pope can be credited for inspiring the subject matter!

“The song is packed with metaphors exploring this whilst referring to the original inspiration: being sent an angel figurine (the one that features on the single artwork) from my aunt," explains singer Mary-Anne Murphy. "The Pope had done a mass blessing through the television, telling people to hold items up to the tv to be blessed. It didn’t quite make sense to me; it was almost a half-hearted blessing, and this sparked the ideas behind the song."
